(8:15am-9:15am) "Conversation with Dan Shaw - Dissociated Narcissism in the case of Eugene O'Neill"

Summary: Reviewing the biographies of the great American playwright, Eugene O'Neill, Shaw reflects on elements of his autobiographical play, "Long Day's Journey Into Night." Here, O'Neill displays extraordinary psychological insight and compassion for himself and his family of origin, all afflicted with addictions and clearly displaying pathologically narcissistic personality traits. Shaw explores O'Neill's dissociated identifications and the intergenerational trauma he passed on to his own children. Reading material will be supplied.

Objectives: Upon completion of the program, the participant will be able to:

1.  Describe the dynamics of the intergenerational transmission of relational trauma

2.  Describe clients' behaviors associated with dissociated identifications with traumatizing significant others.

3.  Describe clinical interventions designed to diminish dissociation and generate insight regarding pathological identifications

(9:30am-12:30pm) "Recognizing and Treating Subjugation Trauma: The Relational Assault on the Self (Part 1)”

Summary: Shaw describes the clinical challenges that arise when working with adult children of traumatizing narcissists. The presentation will demonstrate how the narcissist, dissociating dependency, shame and envy, attacks the subjectivity of those she wishes to control, so that she can disavow dependency in herself and foster submissive dependency in others. Clients who have been developmentally influenced to accept subjugation and self-subjugate need therapeutic intervention that can help them locate a subjectivity, a self, of their own. Clinical material will describe the ways Shaw was able to facilitate the emergence of the sense of self in a client who had been brought up to be hyper-empathetic, at the expense of his own subjectivity, by his traumatically narcissistic mother.

Objectives: Upon completion of the program the participant will be able to:

  • 1.    Describe the dynamics of the traumatizing narcissist’s relational system.
  • 2.    Define subjugation trauma.
  • 3.    Describe how subjugation trauma is expressed relationally and transferentially as well as in the client’s extra-therapeutic relationships.

(1:30-4:30 pm) "Recognizing and Treating Subjugation Trauma: The Relational Assault on the Self (Part 2)”

Summary: This section will focus on working with those whose experience of subjugation trauma has been more severe, leading to extreme symptoms of dissociation, including depersonalization and derealization. The role of dissociated identifications with the traumatizing narcissist in perpetuating a cycle of self-assertion followed by self-denigration will be explored. A way of thinking about and working with dissociated self-states that diminishes dissociation and supports the development of self-regulation skills will be demonstrated.

Objectives: Upon completion of the program the participant will be able to:

  • 1.       Describe interventions that diminish dissociation and increase self-regulatory functioning.
  • 2.       Describe the repetitive cycle of self-assertion followed by self-denigration in the context of dissociated conflicting self-states.
  • 3.       Describe how to use the therapeutic alliance to facilitate the exploration of the shameful, dissociated identifications with traumatizers that typically occur with victims of subjugation trauma.
