(8:15am-9:15am) “A conversation about the contemporary U.S. sociopolitical climate”

Summary:  This conversation will provide a foundation for approaching the current sociopolitical climate in the U.S. from a psychoanalytic perspective. The speaker will raise dilemmas faced by psychoanalytic practitioners and educators in the face of problems such as deportation and separation of families among undocumented immigrants, racial violence and profiling, and threats to women’s reproductive rights and to LGBTQI individuals and communities.

Objectives:

1.       Describe how the current sociopolitical climate in the U.S. has affected issues explored in psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

2.       Recognize the ways in which transference and countertransference dynamics may be impacted by sociocultural trauma in contemporary U.S.

3.       Describe dilemmas faced by therapists and educators in addressing issues of diversity with their clients and supervisees and students.

(9:30am-12:30pm) "Engaging sociocultural issues in psychoanalytic psychotherapy”

Summary: This presentation highlights psychoanalytic understandings of sociocultural context, and presents a framework for integrating sociocultural issues in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. There will be a focus on the impact of sociocultural oppression on intrapsychic and interpersonal worlds of the client and the therapist, and how ongoing trauma pre- and post-election influences the therapeutic frame and process. Clinical vignettes will serve to help translate culturally informed psychoanalytic theory to practice.

Objectives: Upon completion of the program, the participant will be able to:

CME Criteria

  • 1.       Describe ways in which the sociocultural context of the client and the therapist influence conceptualizations of health and pathology in development.
  • 2.       Describe the ways in which various psychoanalytic traditions have contributed to understandings of sociocultural issues in the lives of clients and therapists.
  • 3.       Describe how sociopolitical contexts and oppression affect the therapist, client, and the therapeutic relationship.

(1:30-4:30 pm) "The complexity of sociocultural identity: Immigration and race”

Summary: Contemporary psychoanalytic perspectives emphasize the impact of sociopolitical contexts on mental health, and the centrality of the therapeutic relationship in addressing the effects of oppression on clients’ sense of safety, functioning, and relational life. I will focus on the complexity of cultural identity formation within the context of choice and constraint. A case illustration will elaborate the theoretical points presented.

Objectives: Upon completion of the program the participant will be able to:

  • 1.       Identify how experiences of privilege and oppression contribute to complex and sometimes contradictory cultural identifications, and challenging dynamics within the therapeutic relationship.
  • 2.       Describe the effects of oppression on clients’ sense of safety, functioning, and relational life.
  • 3.       Describe the roles on choice and constraint in cultural identity formation.
