“Deconstructing Self-disclosure: Why it remains controversial”

Despite the widespread use and acceptance of self-disclosure as inevitable, it remains controversial after more than 30 years of clinical conversation.  Why is this so?  Perhaps self-disclosure remains a hot topic because everyone has erred in disclosing too much or something that was unpredictably disturbing to the client.  Just when we think that self-disclosure works well, we are taken aback by an error in our own practice, or through hearing of a bad experience by a colleague.  There is little question that self-disclosure can be enormously helpful but is also a potential landmine.  Partly because of our aversion to establishing any clinical guidelines, and our reluctance to integrate psychotherapy research, we have failed to set up some reasonable parameters for the use of self-disclosure.  This presentation integrates the research on self-disclosure with clinical reports indicating what works, what doesn’t, and how our fears of doing harm interfere with giving clients needed feedback.

Objectives: Upon completion of the program, the participant will be able to:

1.Apply the history of self-disclosure in psychoanalysis

2.Assess how and when it can be therapeutic.
