Speaker Program Meeting: November 11, 2023

TITLE:            The Untelling: Enactment, Transformation & the Construction of the Past

DATE:            Saturday, November 11, 2023

TIME:             9:30 am-12:30 pm

LOCATION:   Virtual - Zoom

Presenter: Robert Grossmark, Ph.D., ABPP

SUMMARY

Building on the idea of enactment as narration, I advance the idea that enactment can be regarded as an untelling” of an unpast”.  I embellish Scarfones concept of the unpast and foreground aspects of repetition, differentiation and atemporality at the heart of enactment. I suggest that what is healing when the analyst can unobtrusively companion the patient in the flow of enactive engagement is the creation of time and the past such that the patient can free him or herself from the constraints of the unpast, repetition and trauma and can thus find his or her own differentiation, subjectivity, being and aliveness. I will offer vignettes from a case to illustrate these ideas. Leaning on Laplanche I will subsequently suggest that the untelling is also an un-telling, an undoing of past translations and transcriptions of the enigmatic and will suggest that only when the hollow of the patient can meet the hollow of the analyst can the old translations be truly re-transcribed. I will argue for a differentiation between filled in” enactments and hollowed-out” enactments.
