“How Our Work as Psychoanalysts Changes Us As People”
Presenter: Andrew Klafter, M.D. (Cincinnati)
Based on 25 years of intensive psychotherapy and psychoanalytic work with patients, as well as supervision, training, and consultation with and analysts, Dr. Klafter will describe his observations about how analysts and therapists are affected by their relationships with their patients. Drawing on object relations theories of psychological development, Dr. Klafter will devote specific attention to the impact of a professional psychotherapy career on the therapist’s real-life interpersonal relationships, adult personality development, marriage and romantic relationships, parenting, political views, religious beliefs, and friendships.
Dr. Andrew Klafter is an adult and adolescent psychiatrist, psychotherapist, and psychoanalyst. He is director of the Advanced Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Training Program at the Cincinnati Psychoanalytic Institute, and also serves as Track Leader for the Technique Curriculum in their Analytic Training Program. Dr. Klafter has served as a psychotherapy supervisor and lecturer at the University of Cincinnati Psychiatry Residency Training Program, where he is a six-time winner of the Golden Apple Teaching Award. Dr. Klafter is also a 2024 winner of the American Psychoanalytic Association’s Edith Sabshin Teaching Award for his innovative techniques in teaching about psychoanalytic theory and technique. He has led psychotherapy training workshops and seminars in the U.S. and overseas. He has published on various topics related to psychoanalytic theory and technique, as well as the interface between psychoanalysis and religion. In his private life, Dr. Klafter is an accomplished photographer and musician, the proud father of four women, proud father-in-law of one son-in-law, and recently became a grandfather.
