Linda B. Sherby, PhD, ABPP
Linda B. Sherby, Ph.D., ABPP, is a psychologist-psychoanalyst in practice in Boca Raton, Florida. She is the author of the book Love and Loss in Life and in Treatment published by Routledge, as well as numerous professional papers. Presently she writes a blog, Inside/Outside, that addresses the complex interaction between patient and therapist. For over 20 years, Dr. Sherby has been active in the Southeast Florida Association for Psychoanalytic Psychology where she has held most board positions.

(9:30am-12:30pm) "To Speak or Not to Speak: Is There a Place for Therapists' Values in the Consulting Room?”
Summary: In this time of such extreme political turbulence and polarization, is neutrality and anonymity
the analyst’s best therapeutic approach? In fact, is it even possible? Can therapists’ values be absent from the consulting room? Using both actual and fictionalized clinical material, this presentation will examine some of the varied responses to this most complex question, including looking at the thorny issue of countertransference.

Summary: This presentation analyzes the movie, “Inside Out,” an amazingly insightful movie that deals
with the complexity of emotions, memory, childhood development, attachment, defense, the unconscious, and more. The movie visually depicts what analysts deal with in their offices every day, illustrating both that emotions organize rather than disrupt both our internal and external worlds and that the integration of emotions, including sadness, is essential for growth and development.
