Horacio Arias Scholarship
Tampa Bay Psychoanalytic Society
Born in Medellin, Horacio Arias, M.D. (1924-2021), was a graduate of the Colombian Psychoanalytic Society and served his residency in psychiatry at the Worcester State Hospital in Massachusetts. Having moved to Tampa with his wife Shirley in 1977, he was for many years our esteemed friend and colleague at the Tampa Bay Psychoanalytic Society, of which he was also a past president
Applicants for the Arias Scholarship must have been members in good standing of the Tampa Bay Psychoanalytic Society (TBPS) for at least two years. Awards of up to $2,500 will be given to TBPS members with a demonstrated financial need for tuition expenses at an approved institute of the American Psychoanalytic Association or the International Psychoanalytical Association. Preference will be given to candidates in training to become clinical psychoanalysts, as well as to first-time applicants, but those in psychotherapy or allied programs, as well as nonclinical candidates, are also eligible. Successful applicants may reapply for continued funding. Grants will be disbursed directly to the institute.
Applicants are required to send the following:
- A 1-2 page letter stating their background and qualifications, financial need, and reasons for taking courses in their program
- A copy of their current curriculum vitae
- Documentation of tuition requirements at their institute
- A letter of support from the institute Director or Dean
