Re-imagining the Representational World: Applying Neuroscience Research to Individual and Couple therapy

Summary:  Neuroscience research has made important contributions to understanding the power of the past. While analytic approaches have traditionally respected and focused on early relationships, current research illuminates the way the brain processes stimuli and creates meaning. Studies in prediction and memory reconsolidation support the importance of revived memories that carry emotionally laden responses in influencing mood and behavior. This presentation will focus on interventions that allow current interpersonal dynamics to be explored and challenged in couple and individual therapy. Case material will be provided to illustrate.

Objectives: Upon completion of the program, the participant will be able to:

1.Identify ways that a therapist can stimulate memories that access the representational world.

2.Summarize how the representational world can be accessed in individual and couple treatment.
